West Coast Wins Worlds!

Here is an email explaining just how awesome the robotics teams did in World Championships last weekend in Anaheim, California. Check out the link to the new challenge and video.  – Coach Jaskiewicz

If you ever thought it was tough to win a VEX tournament in BC or Washington… you were right! If we ever needed proof that teams from our region were some of the best in the world, it came this weekend when there were three teams from our area amongst the final six teams at the VEX Robotics World Championship in Anaheim.

Team 2W, from Gladstone, allied with teams from New Zealand and California to take home the championship trophy, narrowly defeating their classmates, team 2D allied with Exothermic’s team 10B and a team from Hawaii, in the finals.

Other impressive performances came from teams from Cambie Secondary, the defending world champions from team W.A.S.A.B.I., and other Exothermic teams who captained alliances and progressed to their divisional playoffs.

Congratulations to all the teams who made it to Anaheim… if your students are thinking ahead to next year, the 2012-2013 VRC game “Sack Attack” was announced at the tournament. Carney Wins First Award!

After a busy and eventful weekend, the Carney Robotics Teams came away with their first ever award on Saturday. 2189B with Daniel Evans and Euan Bingham earned the Amaze Award in the B Division. The award is given to the team judges pick that has the best quality robot. With constant improvements, a working autonomous and an Ipad to showcase all the design and refinement, they were an easy choice.

As for the tournament itself, it showcased 68 robots, the most ever at a Pacific Region tournament. Teams from as far away as Oregon competed in A and B Divisions. Both Carney teams were in the same division, competing and working together in different rounds. Team 2189B with Daniel and Euan, had a difficult start with connection issues and an autonomous mode that would not work. They finished off well, got the autonomous to score (a first for Carney) and made it into the playoffs. Team 2189A with Harris McKay and Eric Raposo, went 5-1-1 and finished 4th out of a group of 20. They also earned a team captain spot, another first for Carney. Both teams won their first rounds in the payoffs and then lost after a valiant effort in the quarter finals. They wished to have worked together in the playoffs, planning to have done better.

As a bonus, the team was able to use the $3 million dollar surgical robot that was setup onsite from VGH. A very cool opportunity. Congratulations for all the hard work and I hope that next year’s teams will do as well or better.    – Coach Jaskiewicz
